One Saturday morning as I drove up the road leading to our house, I recognized two bikes lying in the driveway of a new neighbour I haven't met yet. I stopped just in time to see my 11-year-old twins from the neighbour's house, carrying cans of soda. I asked what were doing, and Russell answered, "well, you always told us to welcome new neighbours, so we made something for them."
"What did you make?" I asked.
"Pancakes!"
"And how did you get pencakes here on your bikes?"
"Easy," answered Andrew, demonstrating. "We put them in our pockets!" I tried to picture the new neighbour's reaction to these unwanted gifts, but it must have been gracious, since the twins ended up with sodas.
Sometimes, in my zeal to "do something" for God, I am like my twins. I offer Him my crumpled pancakes, which He hasn't asked for, When He has so much more to give me. If I were a bit more like David, I might check in with God to see if my plans were in line with His plans.
